Analogue mixing is still at the heart of Blackparticle. However powerful modern DAWs may be, mixing entirely in the box rarely gives quite the same sense of depth, movement, warmth and scale as a well-judged analogue path. The aim here is not to use hardware for nostalgia's sake, but to give your music a more dimensional, more engaging and more musical finish.

Whether you are sending over stems for a single, an EP or a full album, Blackparticle offers analogue mixing built around careful listening, strong technical judgement and a setup designed to bring out the character of a track rather than flatten it. Projects can be handled from anywhere via the web, and turnaround can be very quick when needed, but the process always starts with what the music is asking for.


At the centre of the studio is a British 32 channel DDA Q2 console with some real history behind it. In the 1990s it lived in the London Astoria, front-of-house mixing and contributing to live recordings for artists including David Bowie, Radiohead, The Cranberries, Nirvana and Caravan. Fully restored, it now forms the centrepiece of the Blackparticle mixing room. More importantly, it remains a superb sounding desk, capable of adding weight, punch, separation and control in a way that still feels instinctive and musical.


The console is fed from four UA Apollo interfaces, giving a total of 48 output channels at mixdown. That provides plenty of scope for detailed analogue summing, while also allowing access to a substantial range of UAD processing from Neve, EMT, Roland, AKG, Manley, Moog, Eventide, Thermionic Culture and others when needed. Alongside the digital side sits a carefully chosen collection of vintage EQs, compressors and external hardware effects, available for group buses and channel inserts where they genuinely improve the result rather than simply decorate it.


Blackparticle also has a custom 42 channel passive summing mixer, the Recombobulator, hand-wired with high-grade components and an integrated pair of vintage Neumann preamps. It offers a different flavour from the DDA console and is particularly well suited to mixes that need a cleaner, more pristine and uncoloured presentation. It is also the preferred path for binaural work, where sample-accurate timing is essential to preserving the width, placement and three-dimensional detail of the sound-stage.
